The UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) has been
present in India since 1951. Under the overarching goal of
poverty eradication, the organization focuses on five
inter-connected thematic areas: poverty reduction,
democratic governance, crisis prevention and recovery,
energy and environment, and HIV/AIDS.
These pictures were taken during an assignment in 2007, in
several States of India. Rajasthan, to illustrate climate
change issues and water management projects; Jharkhand,
where renewable and clean energy projects have been
launched; Tamil Nadu, where UNDP acts to protect a
stunningly beautiful environment and to provide local
communities with alternative livelihoods; and Delhi,
preparing some communities to natural disasters such as
earthquakes. Illustrating UNDP work in the country as well
the issues the organization is trying to tackle, they also
depict daily life in remote Indian areas.
